So, my husband breaks out in large, nasty looking welts (I mean these suckers were huge) all over his body last night. He inadvertantly took a vitamin (dum-dum took two actually) that were expired (as in 2007 - I have NO clue why these are still in our cabinet). He took a mega dose of Benadryl, and after a few hours, he cleared up. Vitamins had cod oil in them - so I am thinking he had a reaction to rancid cod oil? Sound reasonable??? We went through every other possiblity and couldn't come up with anything.

My Mom's having surgery today

We will keep her in our prayers dbee! :hugs:

I have heard of people reacting to old vitamins. I am off to check my medicine cabinet right now! Hope he is feeling better today and has slept off his mega dose of Benadryl....

Did these people have extreme reactions? I was scared a bit. He's still got bumps, but they aren't really welts now and he claims they only itch every 30minutes or so. Keep in mind, this info is being collected from a man. :nonod: There's no telling what's really going on! :ohwell: I know KMa, I'm going through my medicine too. I throw away the kid's stuff immediately when out of date. For the grown ups, I give it a good 4 months or so to be out of date. I know it has a longer shelf life than the expiration, if stored away from humidity/heat. I always smell aspirin too. I found some at my parents that was so vinegary, it was ridiculous. We chucked that!

Yes, same kind of reaction. Welts, itching......since he doubled his dose he will obviously have more. Is he still taking Benadryl? Regular doses as directed on the box will clear up the bumps and itching.
I am just like you - no old medicine for kids and a little longer for the adult stuff. And I smell it too - that is the best test I think.

Do you double-dare me to smell these vitamins? I'm curious, but don't know if I want a whiff of rancid fish?:ack:

LOL!!!!!!

Your secret :spy: is safe with me

Jeesh, my DR. said it would be ok to take them if they expired. They just would lose some potency. He better see me for free if I break out in welts!

These were from 2007! (side note - leave it up to a couple of dimwit pharmacists to have expired drugs around the house! ) I would personally feel safe taking vitamins if they were expired 4 months or less. However, if the vitamins contain fish, you might think twice about taking within even a month of expiring! My poor hubby is still itching - but it's slowly improving. His ankles and wrists are swollen a bit and he has little red dots running down his arms.

If you're bored, this is cute for about a minute.

How'd the surgery go? Everything ok?

I'm sitting here on the porch and I see a bunny in the yard. How cute.......but then I see it chewing on my plants. Stupid bunny!! :argh:

Ya, those bunnies are cute, until they start eating the petals off of your flowers and digging up your mulch. Dang bunnies.

OK, I've got my big Relay for Life dinner with my team tomorrow! We'll be setting up on the field all day and plan to hopefully serve 400 plates of BBQ! Please wish us luck if you don't mind! We may need it!

This is amazing, Radio Shack has the best price on a memory stick I need. Shocking!

 I need to trim the bushes today

 outside in the yard
