(Sold Out) Refurbished Apple iPhone 8GB /w 2 Year Activation for $249

this time I was about to sell my wife's old phone (she upgraded to Centro) and buyer asked me unlock it. Note phone was purchased from ATT. I called to CS right on the spot and got the unlocking code without any questions.

I'm assuming your wife's phone was no longer under contract? I was under the impression that getting an unlock code from cell provider while under service contract was virtually impossible.

I got mines from a local T-mobile dealer BRAND NEW unlocked for $249 few months back.

I assure you that kind of activity is NOT supported by T-Mobile that's the actions of a dealer out for a buck...

Sure, there is a guy at the mall that sells various brands unlocked phones and will even, for a fee, unlock an iPhone if I bring it to him.

When I got back I raised a stink and got the phone unlocked in no time.

When you got back?!?!? What's the point?

I'd say you had at that point, grounds to break that contract - they failed to provide you with service after assuring you the phone would still work!

I'd had them cancel the contract...

First, they are not obligated provide me (or anyone else) with an ability to use 3rd party SIM card and service -there is nothing like that in contract. My phone would work under roaming without any problem, I didn't want to use this service.

Second, (on "what's the point?") - I travel a lot and used different SIMs several times after my phone was unlocked.

I'm not trying to defend ATT (Cingular then), I just share my experience of unlocking phones under contract through CS. I unlocked several Nokia phones with a software off feeBay.

BTW, never seen any company outside of US "locking" phones. You just paying more for a phone and that's it.

Ain't that the truth! Look at Japan, 80%+ off all cell phones come unlocked.

The major cell phone carriers in the states do it because we allow it - by that I mean, overall we do what we're allowed to do by them.

I'm sure that if everyone let their contracts expire and let the carriers know we'd renew contracts when they offer unlocked phones, there'd be some resistance on their part but eventually they'd give in and make unlocked phones available to us.

Unlocking the iPhone is very easy and free...you just need to put in the time to do it. You can buy the iPhone anywhere and not "activate" it...just unlock it with jail break and use your own sim.

Carriers lock phones because they are subsidizing them to you and giving it to you at a cheaper price than retail and in return they make money on you because you signed a 2 year contract....but with the iPhone, you don't really get it cheaper so locking it is pointless, but that's a special deal between AT&T and Apple.
