I don't think she was chosen for her gender. All of the 'obvious' candidates have baggage of some sort or the other that would alienate some portion of the Republican base.
From what I've read, she is a conservative, which is something very rare at the national level.
Yes, there is pandering and positioning at the convention. The black pastor who spoke on Tuesday night looked remarkably like Obama, so much so that it had me giggling every time I looked at him. I don't believe that was 'accidental'. There are other things, but it's early and I haven't had my coffee, so I can't think of them.
The whole 'she's there because she's a woman' thing is the same as saying Obama's there because he's black (which technically he isn't).
