If you know where to look, and smart enough to understand and use some of the services available on the internet, then you would know that there are tons and tons of HD-DVD or Blueray rips (25-30 GB AVI/MKV), or even iso images all over the internet...with maximum download (bandwidth) speed. You never need to buy anything digital ever again. (And no, I'm not referring to torrents)
Ok... so... you spend hours downloading the files. Then you burn them to a blu-ray disc (which you pay for) or else you quickly fill up hard drives. Then this can only be viewed on your PC, unless you have an HTPC that's hooked up to your HD display. The rips (AVI/MKV) additionally ARE NOT the same quality as the original disc. They are lossy, and on a high quality display, you will definitely notice a difference. And if they are direct rips of the movie, they will likely strip some/all of the additional audio tracks, as well as the bonus materials and bonus features.

You know what? No thanks. That's a lot of time and effort. I'd rather have the actual disc, own it legitimately, and enjoy it in 100% quality, with every bonus feature, without spending hours of download time, without needing to hook my PC up to my tv, etc, etc, etc. At 30GB per movie, you'll fill up an $80, 250GB HD after 8 movies. That's $10 a movie right there. Or, you can burn them to 25GB BD-R, which are like, what, $10-$15 each? So in order to keep the movie, it's going to cost you $10 per movie. So for $15-$20, you can actually OWN the real thing. Or, for $15/month you can get a subscription to blockbuster/netflix and get unlimited blu-ray rentals.

And in the end, you might as well get a blockbuster online or netflix monthly subscription and rent blu-ray that way. If you're going to burn your movies to BD-R discs, you're probably not going to spend any more money with one of the $15/mo accounts.

Just doesn't make much practical sense to me, let alone the fact that it's illegal. I'm not going to get all preachy about what's "right" or "wrong", that's up to you to decide, but when it comes to price/convenience, I'll just pay the $20 for the real thing, with full quality audio and video, and the full selection of bouns features, or at least rent it legitimately, which is ultimately cheaper and less of a hassle than pirating.

This sucks. I was hoping that MS would offer some sort of trade-in program for a Bluray add-on if they ever made one. This deal would suggest that other than the few movies I now have this thing is a $170 paper weight.

Being an early adopter does have its risks.

I'm considering this since all the HD-DVD content will be cheap and I can get loads of good looking movies on the cheap. The only problem is I'll have to have the 'ol HD-DVD peripheral laying around taking up space.

I also have the Sega CD, so laugh it up, kids!

Well, you asked how...

no offense, but as of right now people buying HD formats are either videophiles or people with money to waste. there arent too many people who even have a decent setup to get the most out of there HD hardware. to even see a difference from 720p to 1080i/p requires a reputable, overpriced name brand 42" or more HDTV. viewing 720p on any size is quite enjoyable. i only know of a handful of people who even have 1080p capable sets. xbox360 and ps3 can display HD 720p DivX and WMV files on the consoles. 720p divx hdrips usually fit in blank DVD-R's 4.5gb(movie only) and can be downloaded rather quickly. i dont let movies pile up on my PC. once they are done dl'ing, they go straight to discs. same thing goes for 700mb dvdrips onto CD <<< that ones a no-brainer. if you dont have a next-gen console, they even sell DivX DVD Players that play them flawlessly and go as low as $30(standard definition only). if you think you are wasting your time downloading ... arent you wasting your UNLIMITED bandwidth from you ISP as well(mine costs $50/month)? as far as im concerned, that $50/month = unlimited movies, games,...basically EVERYTHING.
on a final note:
sure... HD content is sexy as hell... but ive seen it soo much already that its nothing new. my HD obsession has already passed and nothing looks as amazing as it did before. im fine with whatever i can get for free(everyone better be!) the only things i dl in HD now is .... *cough* pr0n.
