It's a database. It's only as accurate as the data. But it's better than not having any data.

I have used CARFAX several times. It is not the absolute when buying a used car, it is simply a tool. It can provide useful information. The older the car, the less accurate it is. For $6, does anyone expect it to be perfect. A salvage title is listed as such, no CARFAX is needed. Use it as a tool for information.

Just dont trust. I bought a car, carfax showed clean history. Later try to sell it, it was salvage.

You're correct! Cannot rely on a Carfax report. I bought a car with a clean carfax report and then when I tried to sell it, an accident appeared! What the heck?

CARFAX is pretty much worthless unless by chance someone has reported the accident to CARFAX on there own. There is no requirement for any insurance company, state regulation, or auto body shop to report anything to CARFAX. Nothing, zilch, nada. If an accident shows up on CARFAX it is by pure luck and you can rely on it but very few to almost no accidents actually show up. And the CARFAX guarantee only applies to branded titles. Plus, they only honor it if CARFAX knows about the branded title. If they don't know about it, they are off the hooik. Just google CARFAX Guarantee. It's a joke.

Do your research on Carfax reports. Lots of false, innacurate information and non-reported information with any of these types of services. Always - ALWAYS take any used car that you want to purchase to your mechanic first for a once over. If the dealer doesn't allow that (or the seller) then walk away.
