yeah, i can be abrupt sometimes, i often find myself editing my replies or deleting them. i never used to use icons and have noticed my old thread replies to be rather serious and dry so i am using icons more :)

"what is the sound of one hand clapping?"

I wondered. I'm Deaf.

However, such a Zen koan is not above me, since the answer is you thrust out your hand.

Zens like that are meant to be something you meditate on so you can put your mind at rest.

LOL for same reasons they sentence criminals for more than one consecutive life sentence (fear of possible reincarnation)

(as opposed to one consecutive sentence?)

The theories in the book are older than dirt. There have been numerous books written on this. Personally, Im just so tired of hearing about this book. I want the movie to come and go and I want the incessant documentaries to stop.

I dont believe in any of christianity's major tenets and Ive not read this book so maybe im the wrong person to be speaking here. I dont think jesus was anything more than a holy man and a prophet. He was no more the son of god than you or I. And he probably did have a wife and children like any other man in that time. But the church was threatened by women teaching the word of god and was afraid of what the truth about its god-made-flesh would do to undermine the lies and laws they had spread by that time.

I know a good bit about the bible, Im well versed in the gnostic gospels, and I know the stories of rennes le chateau, fr saunière, the cathars, etc. I think that the holy grail is just a story made up to justify the formation of the templars and to justify the crusades, or the plundering of other lands in the name of a holy mission around which the story of arthur was built to give it more positive spin. What sauniere found in the column(real life, not the book) is possibly (albeit very unlikely) another gnostic gospel. Just my .02

geez, squid, you should spew your knowledge more often, like about cooking and other stuff you are well versed in :)

Fiction................no doubt!

I have wanted to give my opinion to that question for some time. I just finished the book (an excellent read by the way:) and when I bought the book I do believe I had to look in the FICTION section of the book store to find it. I love how all these TV programs talk about how Dan Brown got it wrong, he didn't get it wrong, HE MADE IT UP!!?? I'm not refering to anyone specific when I say this but people are stupid and desperate for something to believe in.

I was emailed this great news bit http://newsbusters.org/node/5402

It's fiction as with MOST movies, they're making something out of nothing. The funny part is with every boycott and complaint it just makes people more interested in seeing what all the fuss is about.

Seeing this tomorrow afternoon ;)

Yes, JMB, they are.

I'll be seeing it when I download it. Its certainly not getting any of my hard earned cash. And Dan Brown really didnt make it up, he walked on the shoulders of all the real researchers out there and just embellished it.

I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but is the controversy about whether or not J. got married and had a family?

I haven't read it, but that's what I think I'm hearing on talk radio. (I have to listen to talk radio to know what I'm going to be outraged about each day.)

ROTFL

I think the question was book was fact or fiction

I thought the question was whether that's Tom Hanks's real hair, or did he have to use extensions.

Is what book real of fiction? The DaVinci Code or the Bible? People tend to believe what they are raised with until they find too many discrepancies (if they are smart enough and/or interested enough to look) and find something else to believe. The real challenge is to find something that can help an individual and others with their lives wheather the individual "believes" or not. Since no one is preaching "The Bible according to St. Dan Brown" the question is moot. Brown threatens no one with his adventure story. It's a fun read.
I'm more concerned about people who believe scriptures that they claim justify violating basic morals and killing innocents. I think that is fiction in belief but unfortunately too real in the middle east.

Well, personally for me, I refuse to see it unless someone guarantees me that this movie has no blood, no guns or army tanks, and DEFINITELY, no football! Now is that so much to ask out of a movie?

Oh, sorry. Just practicing the speech to my husband tonight.

(I also think the number of scantily clad females should never exceed similar views of the males. Where's that Equal Rights amendment when you need it ???)

lol, you sound like my wife with the blood, war and sports thing LOL

So I just came from the movie, there were people outside with signs (graphic), banners the whole nine yards it was a sad sight. As soon as we walked out a camera crew interveiwed my guy on what he thought on all the fuss after seeing the movie........ all over a movie how silly. If you don't like fiction then don't see it. How hard is that? ::sigh::

The movie was entertaining by the way, glad I saw it.

I actually really enjoyed the movie. They did a good job of keeping a lot of the book in there. I didn't really experience any big, "Hey wait a second, in the book blah blah blah..." moments. Sure, there were things cut short and/or left out, but nothing big that I can remember. As to the question posed in the subject, it's not a documentary. It's a good mystery movie about solving puzzles based on Christian lore with some betrayal, action, and a little bit of romantic chemistry thrown in. As was said earlier the core ideas brought forth in the movie and book have been around for quite some time now, so to act like these "revelations" are anything new is a bit silly. It's an interesting theory, Jesus having a bloodline that still exists today and all. The connection from Holy Grail to challice to womb to Jesus' pregnant wife is intriguing; it's certainly not beyond reason. All this hub-bub shown in the media about the movie is just attention seeking nonsense. If they're so strong in their beliefs, why do they feel this threatened by a simple movie? If someone tells me that my blood is really raspberry jam you won't see me getting all bent outta shape. It's always good to keep an open mind about things otherwise you'll never know when you might actually be wrong.

My sister said she found our family name was somehow decendent from Christ (via the Internet of all places so we know how reliable that is) Oh well, I always have been the black sheep of the family!
I'm looking forward to seeing the movie tomorrow and next week - X-Men!

Saw it, loved it but I don't think I would if I hadn't read the book. My brother-in-law hadn't read the book and said there wasn't enough action.
