How do you make 4 Gallons of Water Using a 3 Gallon / 5 Gallon Jug?

Fill the 5-gallon jug completely. Pour the contents of the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons of liquid in the 5-gallon jug. Next, dump out the contents of the 3-gallon jug and pour the contents of the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug. At this point, there are 2 gallons in the 3-gallon jug. Fill up the 5-gallon jug and then pour the contents of the 5-gallon jug into the 3-gallon jug until the 3-gallon jug is full. You will have poured 1 gallon, leaving 4 gallons in the 5-gallon jug.

You all have way too much time...

or you're all blind stinking drunk (and there's a separate thread for posting there).

The answer was given within three posts of the puzzle, yet a bunch of you still went on to reply.

And you say I'm the drunk.

you ARE the drunk......the correct answer was in post #7....Cheers!

fill up the five gallon.
from that five gollon...fill up the three gallon
now u r left with 2 gallon in 5 gallon jug. 3 gallon in 3 gallon jug
pour the 3 gallon out
put the remaining two gallons in the three gallon jug
FILL the five gallon again
start pouring into the 3 gallon jug(which already has 2 gallon of water in it)
and waLLah u arel left with 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.

That's the way I thought of too.
though in my version it was "voila" (not sure what "wallah" means) ;Þ

People!!! Save water!!!

Fill 5 gallon jug half way and 3 gallon jug half way.
2.5+1.5=4

Now - how to measure half????
The jug, any jug is a rectangle if You look from 1 side. If You take diagonal through any rectangle - it will be divided into 2 equal triangles, so fill up each jug, so the water line would make a diagonal = that's exactly 1/2 of a jug:yesnod:.

OK.... you use the "3 gallon" jug to measure and the "5 gallon" to fill.

the math: 2x(3)=6 gallons -(5)=1 gallons +(3)= 4 gallons

So, fill up the "3 gallon" jug twice, and pouring it into and filling up the "5 gallon" jug and then you will have exactly one gallon left in the "3 gallon jug". Empty out the 5 gallon jug. Then from the 3 gallon jug pour the 1 gallon that was left into the empty 5 gallon jug. Now you have exactly 1 gallon in the 5 gallon jug. Fill up the 3 gallon jug full and then pour it into the 5 gallon jug and voila exactly 4 gallons!

so, here you're using the "5 gallon" jug to measure and the "3 gallon" to fill
the math: (5-3)=2 gallons -(3)=-1 gallons +(5)=4 gallons

My problem with the Die Hard event is that they had to fill it "exactly" with 4 gallons. But the container isn't 3 or 5 gallons when full. There is usually a little air space in it. So is it exactly 5 gallons full to the rim or somewhere just below the rim?

My solution is to run away from the fountain as fast as I could and let someone else do the math. :behindsofa:
