Gigafast EZ500-S 5-PORT 10/100 Switch $4

Despite its being only $4 AR, does anyone know if this brand is good?

Buy.com finally has this Gigafast EZ-500S switch in stock. I just put an order through, not bad for $3.77 shipped and AR.

Here are some reviews of it.

what is the difference between this and external routers which usually run $50? Thanks.

Although this defines what a router and a switch is, it doesn't explain in normal understanding.

Typically, a router has built-in switches, which can cascade to other stand-alone switches or hubs. From my understanding, when using a router after a dsl or cable modem, only one IP address will appear to the service provider, even if you have multiple computers connected. Each computer will have its own IP address as a variant of the original IP address. Thus, your service provider will not detect extra connections. However, if a switch is used after the modem, the service provider can detect how many computers are used from the line, thus, you can get flagged since it sees all the IP addresses. That was what happened to my friend's Comcast cable modem when he used a switch first, then got a router later. In addition, the router provides firewall protection that the switch cannot.

thanks, Luc. I live on campus and have this Free university ethernet connection in my apartment. Thus, being recognized as more than one IP address does not matter to me. I have one ethernet jack in the apt and two computers. Does this miniswitch allow both computers to get on internet at the same time without losing the speed?
thanks.

Yes, this switch will allow you to connect up to 4 computers in your apartment ;) , since 1 port will be used as an uplink, without losing speed, unlike a hub, where the bandwidth is shared.

thanks again, Luc. I just ordered one. It's a great deal!

the rebate says "offer valid at Ingram Micro only on purchases of specified product(s)."... is buy.com somehow affiliated with Ingram Micro? if not, is the rebate still valid? are there any other rebates for this?

According to the Ingram website, they are a wholesale provider of technology parts. I emailed Buy.com and within 12 hours, they should have provided the response.

Ok, I got answers both from Buy.com and Gigafast. Here they are.
