Ok... do you think that these are over diagnosed by professionals and parents? I work with someone and she miraculously dx'd her child with ADHD this summer and thinks that it is going to solve all her problems. Personally, I think her child just needs an old fashion @ss bustin'.

I do know that these are real, but I feel that it is just used as a crutch to say ok, this is the problem but I have an excuse for it.

Whatcha think?

Oh don't even get me started on this topic :mmph: First off, most children are misdiagnosed because the "Profile" is left incomplete. There should be a cooperative effort to arrive at the most complete diagnosis through a biochemistry workup, genetic interpretation, the physical, psych workup, imput by the teacher/provider, lab work up etc. I do not believe children always benefit from the "Dupont Philosophy" of "Better living through chemistry!" Meaning it is often an easier choice to stuff the kid full of drugs, keep them zoned out, and, not attack the problem head on. Other methods are more conducive to providing better care for the child and resolution for the parent/parents.

As far as a good butt busting is concerned, spare the child, and, go after the parents! If they are not over reacting, then a lot of times they turn a blind eye and are equally difficult to reach regarding a child with a problem. Thus the cooperative approach works well, when applied. It is easier for a Health Professional to "reel in" the over reactive parent, than the parent who thinks their little darling is perfect, and, that the world is wrong for "judging their child!" Family therapy is a must when a child presents with this difficulty, it is a stressful situation for all family members to deal with effectively. Who I feel sorry for is the child's teacher/teachers because the behavior is not magically turned on and off at home or school.:( Just a rough situation all way around........:convinced:

To let everyone know what the so-called expert told me: there is no such thing as ADD, only ADHD-there are 3 types of ADHD
1) Inattentive type 2) Hyperactive-Impulsive type 3) Combined type

Of course, for the kids & adults that suffer from any of the above types, if you don't want to take meds you can try herbal. That is what we used years ago for my son.

Accupuncture was tried a few years ago, not sure where that study ended up? I applaud your aplomb for searching out alternative choices. They are underrated.

It's not just kids!

My father-in-law diagnosed himself as having ADHD. This is after he graduated from college, grad school and seminary, was a minister at a church and is now a professor at a college. Oh yeah... he has problems with focus....

Precisely! I worked with a gentleman who was in Physics, three degrees and was diagnosed with ADHD. Two of his children were diagnosed, and, his second wife, mother of the two kids, yet she was an engineer! Who knows?

You forgot the 4th, which is actually the most common type. It's called "bad parenting"

that is exactly what I mean.. I know that there are instance where these are real, but more often than not I see people dosing their kids for this when I think that a little more parenting and discipline would cure most of it.

I think ADHD is real, and possibly over-diagnosed, but the big problem I see at school is that students and parents use it at an excuse for bad behavior. Like, "I couldn't help throwing my pencil across the room because I have ADHD" and the parent agrees and wants me to be more understanding when their little darling behaves like a baboon.

My personal opinion is that 90% of ADHD is caused when the brain begins to slip backwards down the spinal column. Carefully administered "whacks", applied to the base of the spine, and on the same axis as the length of the spine, will re-position the brain and relieve the symptoms.
The treatment should be re-applied whenever symptoms present themselves.
Studies have shown conclusively that, if used rigorously, the ADHD will completely disappear before early adulthood.

In case of over dose, please call child services

 :claps: Amazing how that application also teaches social manners like sitting down!

imho you guys are sick. adults who hit children should be locked up.

first off, I don't hit my kid.. I don't have to.. I have taught her to be a well behaved child. Is she perfect? by no means. But because I have done my job, the reward is having a child that I can take anywhere without having to worry about how she will act. But I do approve of spanking, and have when she was younger. did I beat her? no, but she would get tapped.

spare the rod and spoil the child..

to each his own

and imho.. I think parents who don't discipline their children should be locked.. I would much rather see a parent reach behind and give a swat on the behind as to watch the child walk all over the parent and the child act like a total spoiled brat.

Nobody has to hit a child and I don't think any parent should be encouraged to do so regardless of their behavior. Of course it is important to discipline children but that doesn't meant you have to hit them. There are many ways to teach your children and I don't think hitting them is very effective. I never spanked my kids and they are far from being brats.

I agree. My parents never laid a hand on my or my brothers. BUT, we always knew where the line was and there was no doubt in our minds what would happen if we ever crossed it.
