Frankly, I am so lost as to how this works. The actual program, that is. Is it like a car rental service? They offer it at my university, but I don't know how it works. It says like $x.xx/day or /hour...

It's like a car rental service, except you can rent it by the hour. You pretty much go online, see when it's available, and make a reservation for a particular car for however long you want. You use your Zipcard to unlock the car at your reserved time, and the car keys are inside. There's a gas card for gas so you don't have to pay for that, and a lot of their cars are hybrids, at least at my school. When you're done using it, you return it to its assigned spot, and "check out" by locking the doors with your card. That's pretty much it.

They are supposed to have cars in spots all over town, so it's more convenient than finding a car rental lot.

the best part about Zipcar is that insurance & gas are both included.

college kids sometimes siphon gas out of Zipcars and sell to their friends.
    (enough said)

Do people really buy "siphoned out" gas? Wouldn't it simply be easier to rent a Zipcar for 1 hour, just grab the gas card and take it with you, then use it to fill up your personal vehicle's tank? :convinced:

I love Zipcar. I have been a member for about 2 years. It's the perfect thing in NYC if you don't own a car. I have rented Ford Explorers, Suburau Outbacks, Mini's and a Tacoma pickup from time to time, depending on my need. Gas, insurance and in-and-out parking at the lot the car lives is all included. I wish this offer were available in NY but I guess they figure people like me wouldn't have too much trouble not driving their won car since I haven't even owned my own car for over 10 years.

I think if you tried to use a zipcar gas card to fill your car you would run the risk of getting nailed by your license plate or since if you rented the zipcar and the card was used on another car, the last renter would be the most suspect. When I get a zipcar I check that the gas card is there. If not I'd call it in immediately. After all, zipcar getting ripped off will trickle down to me having to pay higher zipcar rates.

I'd love to do this if they only had more locations in Milwaukee. Would be perfect for driving to and from work.

Zipcars have GPS locators in them. They know how far you drive them & that better match up with the gas. They know when you buy gas too, so they know who bought it.

You also have to key in the odometer when you get gas, and it won't work if the number's "off." Siphoning gas though... I never even thought about that.

Siphoning gas....well its kinda mess up in a way cuz if too many people did that (if possible) then the company would stop the service. That pretty much ruin the free service they are offering to everyone else. I mean....free gas...ill take it...but dang...
